The London Marathon 2025 - Sunday 27th April
It’s incredible to think that this year sees the running of the 45th London Marathon! Many of us will remember the very first one, way back in 1981. At a smidge over 26 miles, it has made history as the world’s largest field in the discipline.
On Sunday 27th April we will watch in anticipation and awe as our 7 volunteers run the London Marathon in aid of WLAC – they are an inspiration to us all.
Meet our superstar runners! Click their pictures to visit their Marathon pages, and find out why they chose to run for WLAC.
This year is set to be record breaking, as more than 56,000 runners have registered to take part - and rather impressively exceeds the current record of 55,646 finishers set by the New York Marathon last November.
Fun Marathon Facts:
The slowest race was run by Lloyd Scott - wearing a deep-sea diving suit - who finally finished in 5 days, 8 hours and 29 minutes. Thankfully since then, the organisers have set a 24 hour time limit!
The percentage of runners that start the race and don’t finish is less than 2% - in other words 98% of runners finish the marathon!
The average marathon time for beginners is about 4.5 hours, but if you were to walk the full length of the course, it would take around 8-9 hours, so it still requires some level of training.
The London Marathon generates some outstanding stories each year, and in 2024 raised a staggering £67 million for charitable causes with a colossal 53,840 participants taking part. Last year, our runners raised over £11,000!
