See your neighbourhood with fresh eyes
Local history expert Caroline MacMillan offers guided walks in aid of local charities. Last month, Caroline took a group of neighbours and friends along Askew Road and the surrounding streets.
Caroline shared facts, figures, stories and her enthusiasm for local history. We explored familiar streets but this time with fresh eyes - and even discovered streets within a few minutes of where we live that we had never ventured down before.
Caroline explained the origins of street names, how the area had changed through the years and drew our attention to interesting architectural details and remnants of the past.
In the 18th Century, the area of North Fulham around Askew Road was farmland with just a few dwellings and a single path called Gaggle Goose Green running beside a tributary of the Stamford Brook. Having thought that Askew Road was so-called due to its meandering path, we now know all about the Askew family who brought coal to the area, bought up land and named the road.
Caroline offers walking tours across West London and invites donations which she gives to local charities including The Upper Room, Hammersmith Community Gardens and West London Action for Children.
Thank you Caroline! And thank you to those who joined our walk and made such generous donations.
